Abstract


Writing is one of language skills that has to be mastered by language learners.
English learners, as foreign learners may have some problem in writing english
text related to the use of grammatical cohesion. Therefore, this research is
aimed to identify the use of grammatical cohesive devices found in english
students’ writing of second semester at Nahdlatul Ulama University of Blitar. It is
worth to know whether their understanding in constructing english sentences
has been sufficient or still need further insight. The method of this research is
qualitative research method. The data was gained from students’ writing task
limited to second semester. Meanwhile the theory used in this research is
proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976) focusing on grammatical cohesion. The
result shows that not all type of grammatical cohesion found in students’ writing.
There are only reference and conjunction found while substitution and ellipsis
are not found. Moreover, there are some mistakes they still made in using
grammatical cohesion. It is assumed that they do not fully understand yet in
using grammatical cohesive devices in their writing. Therefore, the lecturers
should have proper startegy to enhance students understanding about
grammatical cohesion.
